Box lots are collections of photographs donated by a single person or business, or taken by a single photographer. For example, we hold a large collection of photographs taken in the 1950s by professional photographer Gordon Coster. Another collection, donated by Bowman Dairy, contains photographs of milk delivery vehicles over the years, as well as pictures of striking workers. To find box lots, search the online catalog ARCHIE. Staff members may be able to give you suggestions of box lots that might include images of interest to you.
These collections may be as small as a single folder, or include more than 100 boxes in one collection. For the larger collections, you will often find a link to a container list or finding aid in the catalog record. This will give you an idea of what is contained in each box, so that you can request only the boxes most likely to have photographs relevant to your search.
