Newspapers

A guide for navigating and exploring the Chicago History Museum's newspaper collections.

Early Newspapers and Indices

Newspaper indices are listings of newspaper articles related to a name or topic, helping researchers find articles about a person, subject, or event without having to read through an entire paper. Indices are arranged alphabetically and provide a citation to the date of the article. Indices are available for many of Chicago’s early newspapers. A selection of index titles are linked below.

These publications are available on the open shelves in the Abakanowicz Research Center.

Composite and Topical Collections

Composite and topical collections allow searching and browsing by subject area, time period, or individual, rather than searching by newspaper title. CHM's composite collections are listed below. The collections are not exhaustive of all research material about a topic, simply a selection of newspaper publications.

You can search composite collections in ARCHIE by following these steps:

  1. Change the search parameter from ‘Everything’ to ‘Newspapers’
  2. Change the scope from ‘All Fields’ to ‘Call Number’
  3. Enter one of the composite collection headings listed below
  4. Select a newspaper title from the results and check the Holdings to see available dates and years

Where possible, collections with inventories are linked.

Request a newspaper composite collection by using a blue call slip. The name of the collection is the call number.
