Research Center  

A guide to the Research Center at the Chicago History Museum, including hours, access, policies, etc.

Visitors to the Research Center will need to fill out a registration form, show a photo ID, and check oversized belongings in the Museum lobby.



Please lock up bags and coats either at the Visitor Services Desk on the first floor of the Museum or in one of the lockers in the Research Center.


Photocopying and Camera Use

Photocopying fees:


$.25/page for History Fair students

Please note: Photocopies will not be made of city directories, newspapers, scrapbooks, maps, color photographs, and original photographs created prior to 1900.

Camera use:

Researchers may photograph most Research Center material. Check with a Research Center staff member and read and sign the Camera Use Policy before taking photographs.

Researchers who can't visit the Research Center in person may wish to use the Remote Photocopy Request form.


Paging Items

The majority of our collections are housed outside of the Research Center. Call slips are available on each table and should be filled out as completely as possible so that Research Center staff can retrieve the material. Paging stops at 3:30 pm.



Much of our material is fragile; please respect the following policies:

  • Pencils only
  • Cell phones silent
  • No food, drink, or gum

  • the catalog
  • the historical Chicago Tribune and Chicago Defender database
  • Sanborn Maps and more

Have a laptop or tablet? Wi-fi is available in the Research Center. Please ask for the password at the reference desk.
