A guide to the Chicago Sun-Times Collection at the Chicago History Museum.

Accessing Images

If jobs have been digitized, the Digital Images Available field in the Sun-Times inventory will be checked:

Digital images can be accessed by clicking the Link to View Images button in the Sun-Times inventory:

Due to the volume of the collection, images are stored in multiple locations. The link will take you to one of three places:

  • CHM Images: CHM’s searchable and browsable visual resources portal. If the digital images are published on CHM Images, the link will take you directly to them. Only a fraction of available digital images from the Sun-Times collection can be found on CHM Images.
  • Box: Box is a cloud solution for file storage and sharing and does not require an account. You can visually browse images on Box, but you cannot search keywords or see descriptive information. If digital images exist online but are not published on CHM Images, the link will take you to a series of Box Folders. Once you’ve clicked the link, scroll through the folders and select the job number you would like to view. You may need to click through to the second or third page to find the job number.

  • In the next folder, view the images. We recommend switching to Grid View to browse thumbnails more easily.

Viewing Negatives at the Abakanowicz Research Center

To view Sun-Times negatives in person, visit the Abakanowicz Research Center at the Chicago History Museum. To determine which jobs have associated negatives, see the Negatives Available field in the Sun-Times inventories (a checkmark means CHM owns the negatives):
