If you've reached this page after clicking the Link to View Images button from a Sun-Times inventory,
the image(s) you wish to view are not immediately available but may be requested.
Jobs in the Sun-Times inventory may not have digital images available for the following reasons:
Digital images exist but are not yet publicly accessible – in this case, CHM can provide viewing copies to the researcher upon request.
Digital images do not exist but CHM owns the negatives – in this case, CHM can scan the negatives to create digital images (low-res or high-res) for a fee (see Digitization Fees below).
Digital images and negatives do not exist – in this rare case, CHM is unable to provide access. The previous collection owner likely sold the negatives and did not retain the digital files, but the record remained in their inventory.
CHM's Rights and Reproductions staff can review the record(s) and let you know what is available. Please email your request to rightsrepro@chicagohistory.org, and be sure to include the following information found in the inventory record:
CHM's Rights and Reproductions staff can create low-resolution or high-resolution images upon request if original negatives exist. See Negatives Available checkbox field in the Sun-Times inventories:
High-resolution - Due to CHM's agreement with the Chicago Sun-Times, CHM can release high-resolution images only with an associated license. Digitization and licensing costs are combined and can be found on CHM's fee schedule.
Low-resolution - CHM can create PDF contact sheets (see sample here) and deliver them via a link to Box.com. Contact sheets include all images of a job and are suitable for research purposes. The cost is $20 per job requested.
Classroom use - CHM waives fees for students and educators obtaining images for classroom use. Please contact rightsrepro@chicagohistory.org to inquire about free images.
The Chicago Sun-Times has appointed CHM as the acting licensing agent for all Chicago Sun-Times photographs. Though the Chicago Sun-Times owns copyright, CHM can license Sun-Times images on their behalf. CHM's fee schedule can be found here: https://images.chicagohistory.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Fee-Schedule_2019-10-30.pdf
To request a license, please email the details of your request to rightsrepro@chicagohistory.org.
